The first national event involving the multimedia area, namely the Workshop on Multimedia and Hypermedia Systems, was held in São Carlos/SP, in 1995. This workshop initiated a continuous series of events which own great reputation, especially due to serious organization, high quality standards of the papers presented in its technical sessions, and the novelty of the focused themes.
The workshop became a national event in its second edition (1996), being held in Fortaleza/CE, as part of the XIV Brazilian Simposium on Computer Networks (SBRC). Since 1998, given the importance of the area and the success of the preceding events, the Workshop was elevated to the category of symposium, being called, from then on, the Brazilian Symposium on Multimedia and Hypermedia (SBMedia). In 2003, motivated by the adoption of the World Wide Web as technological basis for hypermedia, the name SBMedia was finally changed to WebMedia.
The event to be held in Vila Velha, the forteenth of the series, continues the sequence of symposiums realized under this name since 2003. This event aims at providing a single, high-profile, nationally renowned forum for the theory and practice of multimedia, hypermedia and the Web.
